Press Release: NFA Surpasses 5,000 Petitions to CPSC to #SaveOurFireworks

WASHINGTON – The National Fireworks Association (NFA) today reached the 5,000 mark on signers of a petition to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urging them to listen to the science presented by the NFA and defeat the proposed NPR on metallic powder.

This morning, the NFA delivered by priority mail 4,688 signatures to each CPSC commissioner.

“For the NFA and our members, the number one priority is safety,” said Nancy Blogin, Executive Director of the National Fireworks Association.“Without safe products, we wouldn’t be the nearly one billion dollar a year industry that we are today.  The CPSC needs to read the data we’ve provided, process the science, and listen to our members about how this rule is misguided and will not make consumer aerial fireworks any safer.”

The NFA began its petition drive two weeks ago in Wichita, KS at its annual fireworks expo. Some highlights of the petition include:

  • 4,688 signatures delivered to the CPSC this morning
  • The petition remains online and is now over 5,000 signatures.
  • Signers of the petition are from every state in the country and the District of Columbia
  •  The grassroots petition drive was conducted through social media, primarily Facebook and Twitter.
Yesterday, the NFA delivered to the CPSC a report with scientific data proving that the proposed powdered metals ban lacks a rational basis because it would permit more energetic burst charges than those that it proposes to ban.

About NFA: The National Fireworks Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for the safety of consumer fireworks. Importers, distributors, manufacturers and sellers of commercial fireworks make up the over 1,200 small businesses member companies who operate in the United States.
