National Fireworks Association Disappointed in Cancellation of Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular
WASHINGTON – National Fireworks Association (NFA) President Steve Houser, released the following statement after the Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced the cancellation of the 2020 Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular:
“Boston, more so than any other American city, is synonymous with the Fourth of July. From the Boston tea party, which started the entire revolution from tyranny; to Boston’s own son John Adams, who said we should celebrate the Fourth of July with bonfires and illuminations – Boston’s celebration of Independence Day is a quintessentially American event.
“The NFA is disappointed in the Mayor’s decision to cancel this annual celebration. While we acknowledge the need to remain safe and practice appropriate social distancing, we believe that can be done while we celebrate our nation’s birthday. Just this past week, Bostonians came out to see the 104th Fighter Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard which proved to be an uplifting event and we believe the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular would have provided a similar safe experience.
“If New York City can come up with a plan to safely carry on with their July 4th Fireworks display and celebration, then we believe that Boston can as well.”
“I would encourage Senators Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey, Congressman Joe Kennedy and the rest of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation to make their voice heard by telling the Mayor to save the Fourth and support the thousands of hard-working Americans employed by the fireworks industry as well as the patriotism, history, and traditions that surround the 4th of July.”
